Technical design development and fabrication of a freestanding wayfinding sign for the Beton Building, resolving complex fixing constraints in collaboration with Atelier Works.

One of the defining architectural features of the Beton Building is the low-level cladding of a distinctive Spanish ceramic tile. While visually striking, the composition and construction of this cladding presented a significant challenge for the integration of wayfinding signage, as direct fixings risked compromising both the material finish and the underlying build-up.

Working in close collaboration with Atelier Works, we developed a bespoke freestanding sign that responded to these constraints while remaining faithful to the original design intent. Standing over two metres in height, the sign is subtly offset from the building envelope, allowing it to read clearly within the space without interrupting the tiled façade.

A small number of strategically positioned supporting brackets were fixed into pre-drilled locations, minimising intervention into the cladding and ensuring accuracy during installation. The primary structural load is transferred through the base of the sign, which is set onto a concealed concrete pad. The surrounding paving finish is carried over the pad and around the base of the sign, creating the impression that the element rises directly through the floor plane.

Finished in a specialist gold powder coat, the sign responds dynamically to changing light conditions. The cut stencil forms cast shifting shadows across the surrounding surfaces, reinforcing the sign’s presence while maintaining a refined, architectural quality. The result is a carefully resolved wayfinding element that balances visual impact with technical restraint, demonstrating how complex material conditions can be addressed through considered design development and precise fabrication.
